The De Cordova Bend Dam contains the lake, both are controlled by the Brazos River Authority. Construction was begun on the Cordova Bend Dam on December 15, 1966; Impoundment of water began on September 15, 1969. The lake also serves as an excellent recreational destination. One of the more popular activities is fishing. The lake is annually stocked with bass and in past years with catfish. Some of the naturally occurring fish species in the lake include, Largemouth bass, Striped bass, White bass, Channel catfish, Flathead catfish, White crappie, and Sunfish. There are many other popular recreational activities including, boating, wakeboarding, water skiing, and swimming. There are also plenty of Recreation areas for public use, including De Cordova Bend, Thorp Spring, City Park, Hunter Park, and Rough Creek.
